THE FASHION MODEL AND THE RACING DRIVER
Gelarto Rosa comes from the culinary vision and passion of one person: Niki Szökrön – our founder, managing director, and head chef. Gelarto Rosa Barcelona is the brain-child and passion project of Niki and her Spanish, ice cream loving business partner: local legend Marc Gené.
Let’s Start at the Beginning
Niki originally studied Economics before spending nearly a decade travelling the world as a fashion model. She then managed two high-profile restaurants in Budapest, before deciding to combine her management experience with her creativity and independent spirit to open her own business. Niki trained in traditional ice cream making at the highly respected Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna. A one-year internship at a small family-run artisanal ice cream business in Italy taught her the art of making ice cream roses.
Niki set up the first Gelarto Rosa in 2005, in her native Budapest. There are now two Gelarto shops in the heart of Budapest, in the historic and beautiful St. Istvan Basilica. The Gelarto Rosa store is famous throughout Hungary, and its huge popularity has led to many highly satisfied customers giving in to temptation and wanting to set up a franchise in their own countries. The first international franchise opened in March 2017, in the prestigious Pearl-Qatar development in Doha, Qatar.
When Niki Met Marc
Barcelona-born Marc visited Budapest to commentate on the Hungarian Grand Prix, and met Niki through a mutual friend Gyula. Marc is a former professional racing driver (Formula 1; winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans), and still drives professionally, as the test and development driver for Scuderia Ferrari. He is also well-known as a TV commentator (Sky TV, Movistar TV) and a brand ambassador (Nissan, Pirelli, Alfa Romeo). Marc has a degree in economics, and is an entrepreneur and investor.
Marc loved the vibe, energy, and ethos of Gelarto Rosa – the long queues in summer, the delight on customers’ faces, the professionalism of the staff, the beautiful décor, and the delicious ice cream served in an artistic rose shape by trained gelatieri. Niki loved Barcelona for its art, architecture, weather, great food, and relaxed lifestyle. So the three of them: Niki, Marc and Gyula decided to start this new venture to provide great-tasting premium ice cream in an eye-catching shape to discerning customers in a beautiful and historic part of Barcelona. And so, Gelarto Rosa Barcelona was born – we launched in March 2018.
But don’t take our word for how delicious and different our ice cream roses are. Give in to temptation – come in and try them for yourselves!
We present our ice cream as a beautifully created rose, rather than as scoops, on a cone. We acknowledge that some other ice cream makers also sell ice cream roses, with varying degrees of artistry and flavour. We are often copied, but never beaten… it takes a lot of training and skill, and more than a decade of perfecting the balance between great ice cream taste and superior product consistency, for us to be able to give our customers the perfect ‘rose’.
Our name is no mistake. Gelarto combines gelato and art, the passions of both Niki and Marc.
Our artistry lies not only in our rose design, but also the ice cream itself. Our ice cream is always freshly made, from the finest natural ingredients, using traditional Italian ice cream making techniques. This means our ice cream is always fresh and natural, a difference you can definitely taste. We have also created some very exotic and unique flavours to tantalise your taste buds.
We think we truly stand out amongst the many cafes, restaurants, wine bars and other eateries in both Budapest and now Barcelona, because our ice cream parlours are instantly recognisable. Each shop is individually and uniquely designed, in the classic style of a 1950s ‘grandmother’s kitchen’ from Tuscany, Italy, with local variations.
We also try to offer exceptional customer service, with highly trained, friendly and knowledgeable staff serving and satisfying customers from all over the world. The core members of our team in Budapest have been with us for years, helping our company grow to where we are today. The members of our team in Barcelona have gone through a rigorous selection process and intensive training program to give you the same wonderful customer experience which delights our customers in Budapest.
